BACK YARD BLEACH JOB
March 20, 2009
HOME Girl has a lot to answer for. Not only did her beads have me snapping up my own left, right and centre, her jumpsuits had me hankering for a longer waist and legs to carry one off. But it was her ways with a bottle of bleach that had me in the back yard flinging a bleach-loaded toilet brush at my jeans.
I bought a pair of Levis (above) for $7 to splatter with bleach but on first go was left with a pair that yellowed and looked like I’d been crawling about under the house in them. My theory is they were fixed with a fade-resistant chemical because the bleach made nary a dent in the colour.
I dragged a second pair out of the cupboard, a daggy old pair (second and third pictures above) I use for Girl Guide camps, and flung bleach at them to better effect. Spurred on I had a second go at the Levis and was quite happy with the resultant worn and faded look. I deliberately bought the Levis a couple of sizes too big to wear them belted on the hip and bunched at the cuff. The darker jeans look cute turned up at the cuff, with my Birkenstocks and a white tee.
