THE work Christmas party was Friday and though more champagne was thrown down the hatch then I'd usually imbibe in, I came up OK on Saturday morning. Best of all, I'd booked a room in the city, bought tickets to the Picasso exhibition at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and had my flats packed to enjoy a day hoofing it around the city. What I didn't drink in champagne, I made up for in macaron scoffing. Someone stop me eating. Seriously.

YOU may have guessed by now I like old things, so a peek around Harper's Mansion, at Berrima, was part of a visit to the Southern Highlands on Saturday. National Trust volunteers manage the site and I loved that, despite the house and garden needing hours and hours of work (the volunteers are saints) someone had taken the time to cut big armfuls of flowers and greenery to decorate the rooms and found vintage linen to make up the bed and dress the tables. My pics are dark, but it's a dark house. That last one is of me. That mirror was great. It's convex so makes your head bulge.

MUM and I had a peek at Annie Trevillian's work on exhibition in the Sturt Gallery. Trevillian is running the short course on textile printing at the Sturt Winter School during the school hols. Oh, please, please, please, I hope she runs another workshop in summer, or maybe next winter. I should be a little more free to do it by then.

STURT, at Mittagong, is a great place for aspiring craftsmen. The weaving rooms were too inviting. Thank you to all the lovely women who let me take pictures, nattered with my Mum and let us warm ourselves by their open fire. Just look at that bookshelf packed with pages of inspiration.

THIS is the magnificent Heide II, once owned by art patrons and writer / artist / art lovers and collectors John and Sunday Reed.

I loved standing in both of Sunday Reed’s Heide I and Heide II kitchen gardens, in the spot where the Heart Garden was and walking to the property’s existing boundary to find Rosa mutabilis, which is the subject of the painting by Sidney Nolan and exhibited in the retrospective on at the Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia while I was in Melbourne. I had actually seen the exhibition at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, where as it happens, Archibald Prize winner Del Kathryn Barton’s work is showing. Barton’s works was part of the Romance Was Born Garden of Eden exhibition of textiles and design showing at the National Design Centre while I was in Melbourne. How’s that for an artistic six degrees of separation?
