I WAS heartened to hear a commentator on Richard Glover’s drive time radio show earlier this year (about the time jobs were lost at Pacific Brands – the head of Australian icon Bonds) suggest the aw09 and ss10 period of fashion retail sales would be marked be a decline in the cut-price, poorly-made, new-stock-every-week trend in fashion consumption. Harking back to Polly Leonard’s editorial in the “Frugal” edition of Selvedge, she made a suggestion the “handmade” label could become more sought after than say “Made in Italy”.
