THIS time last week I was on my way home after five days in Darwin. I'd never been to Darwin but stepdaughter No.2 is living there and I planned a visit to coincide with her time off work.

It's the wet season and a time few tourists are in town so many of the regular attractions were closed but we made good use of the fact the place wasn't crawling with visitors and just took things slow and easy and packed plenty of water. The advantages were we had most places to ourselves and, for me particularly, what's in flower and fruiting at this time of year is pretty spectacular.

I often associate particular colours or music to a place and for Darwin, pale pinks, coral and peach would be the colour of Darwin's wet season - nature's complement to the vivid greens you expect of a tropical locale.

Katherine Gorge is beautiful. We took a day trip and I'd recommend anyone planning a trip to the gorge book a tour with an overnight stay, or pack up a campervan and travel out there yourself. It's a good four to five hour drive out there and to do that, enjoy the gorge, and come back in one day is taxing - especially if there's no chance of a swim. Boo hoo.

Darwin is so close to Asia you can almost smell fish fermenting for that stinky Asian fish sauce - which I'll add, I love. The Saturday fruit market is not quite an Asian market but it's probably the closest I've seen in Australia. The Vietnamese sweets, pho, grilled meats and the closest thing to a Ho Chi Minh fruit smoothie I've had in Australia.
