THE first zucchinis have been plucked from bushes and along with the first zucchinis, the first of the tomatoes.

I never ever buy tomato plants, they just sprout from the spots I’ve had the compost bin. There are large red toms on, cherry toms and the yellow pear-shaped toms that we inherited when we bought the house. They do the best, rewarding us with a bumper crop most years.

The garden is also sprouting plenty of rocket and basil – perfect for pesto – and there’s a couple of eggplant on.
