ART is a subjective thing. We all know that, yeah? As artworks have gone up around the house the children have delivered a running critique of the selection. Apparently if it’s not a body boarding poster or tasteful still life painting of flowers, it sucks. I noted, listening to their complaints, err, review that I had an emotional attachment to much of the art we’ve hung. The work by friend and Mudgee artist Jenny Bennett, titled Tangle of Matter and Ghost, depicts another friend whose daughter was killed in a shooting accident. The embroidery was done by me years ago to console a broken heart and busy my hands and mind. The smaller ink and watercolour was done by a colleague and friend I worked with in Vietnam, Hoang Duong Cam. Duong Cam sent this to me as a Christmas card years ago. His English wasn’t great but he didn’t let that deter him and let his art speak for him.
