THRIFT
THE ONE ITEM OF INTIMATE APPAREL YOU SHOULD OP SHOP FOR
May 17, 2017Cold mornings mean it’s time to flush out the summer staples and dredge up those cosier items from the back of the wardrobe.
Why you should buy stockings from an op shop
1. You go through regular store-bought tights in the first, second (or if you never move) third wear.
Op shop tights are often way more lux than you can usually afford. They turn up in op shops because they were the ‘just-in-case’ pair bought for a special occasion and then, because things went well, never worn.
2. Your regular store-bought tights are uncomfortable as all get out. They droop where no one wants to feel a droop or, worse, a creeping wedgie.
The packaged, unworn tights I’ve scored in op shops include labels like Schiaparelli, Givenchy and Christian Dior. They're always, hands down, the most wearable, comfortable, breathable, beautiful stockings to wear.
3. Store-bought tights come in “nude”, “tan” and “ebony” - that’s beige, beige and black.
Oh the glory of thrifted tights. They come in all manner of cool shades and you’ll be amazed at how a pale emerald green, dusty blue or pastel pink stocking with a short or long boot can really lift an outfit. These colours don’t overpower, they’re subtle. No one else will be able to match your sartorial elegance.
4. Your store-bought stockings never wash well.
In the main, the stockings you'll find date back 10, 20 even 30 or 40 years. They’ve been stashed away waiting for that special moment. The quality of these stockings is better than those made by today's fast fashion suppliers, and, as a result, with a little loving care these stockings will wash up better than their modern-day counterparts.
Dig through the stash next time you’re in the op shop. The few gold coins you’ll lay down will set you up for the season.
