LIFE is in limbo at the moment and I am frustrated. Add to that the fact my partner is in full-blown university assessment mode and we’re down staff at work and you’ve a recipe for resentment and anger. I am doing my level best to keep everyone happy but, you know, I’m not. Happy that is. There, I said it.

I’ve turned to the pages of a recent junk shop buy – a 1939 edition of the Commonsense Cookery Book. I bought it based on its recipe for rock cakes. I haven’t eaten a rock cake since I was a child and, boy, oh boy, I made up for it today. Six rock cakes and counting.

What are you up to this week? It’s got to be better than the delirium of servitude I have planned.

  1. Mmmm, rock cakes!
Love a Commonsense Cookery Book, I grew up on recipes from one...now my kids are doing the same. 1939 must have some classics in it.

  2. I picked up something similar in the Barossa a few years back. I love the devotion to lard, dripping and 'mock' things. I think eating rock cakes is a good way to spend a few days. Hope your week picks up. I prescribe more rock cakes and maybe a box of yoyos, my nan used to make great ones and they were known to cure scraped knees, mean brothers, and losing monopoly :)

hope this week is better for you, baking from that wonderful cookbook should make you smile just a little though.
I'm off to kinder tomorrow to discuss with the kinder group what they'd like to bake...hmmm, should be interesting.

  5. That sucks. Don't go feeding out so much of yourself to everyone else that there's none left for being you. Glad you at least got to have plenty of rock cakes for yourself! Now, how to bake extra time and less of other people's responsibilities on your plate?

  9. Ooh, I haven't had these since I was a child. They were one of the first things I baked. I must have another go. I'll let you know how they turn out.

I also used to make peppermint creams from a Blue Peter recipe. They were tooth achingly sweet, made with icing sugar, egg whites and peppermint oil......Probably really bad for you, but we loved them!

    Hope things are better now.

  10. I'm not sure a rock cake would help my current mood. Although there might be a fighting chance with six. Hang in there, lady.
