WHEN cicadas are humming before sun-up, you know it’s going to be a hot day. I found two dead cicadas – they have an incredibly short life cycle – in our yard on Saturday. They’re beautiful things. In a few weeks we’ll find empty cicada shells hugging the trunks of our trees.

What sounds, smells, sights make you think of summer?

  4. Wow! I've never actually seen one before, we hear them in our garden all the time but I can never actually locate them, it's actually quite lovely (considering insects freak me out!!) My favourite summer sound is waves lapping up on the beach, favourite summer smell is definitely coconut shampoo and favourite summer sight is my 3 boys running through the spray from the hose in the garden :-)

  5. The hum of cicadas has been deafening near our house and it always makes me think that Christmas must be just around the corner...
Nectarines...the sounds of thongs clicking...putting the cotton blanket on our bed and packing away our heavy doona...and the smell of bbqs as I come home from work all make me thing of summer

  7. Oi, so many sounds and smells and images that evoke summer, especially an Aussie summer. Jodi, I do know exactly that dusk cooling of the grass smell. Oh and the smell of warm nectarines ... and mangoes. Mmmmm.

  8. I remember collecting cicada shells when I was a kid - their song is definately the song of summer.
I hadn't realised (until your post) how much I miss that noise. I don't think we have them here in Ballarat.

  14. The smell lawns being mowed reminds me of summer, but I recently realised that in Australia lawns get mowed in winter because in summer there is no grass. So I'll have to change that one in my head!
