WET weeks are supposed to be good for curling up with a good book. Unfortunately my days of languishing the day away with a favourite book, tucked up under a blanket with a hot chai beside me are long gone. If I had a day to do nothing but read I would be reading Steve Toltz’ A Fraction of the Whole.

How’s this for weird? I went to uni with Steve, though didn’t know him well, and saw his pic in a review of the Sydney Morning Herald Young Novelist nominees for this year, the winner to be announced at last month’s Sydney Writer’s Festival. I noted the book and the following day ducked into the bookstore to locate it. It wasn’t on the shelves, so, given I am on a book buying hiatus, scurried from the shop – my hands blinkering my eyes. Lo and behold if the very next day I was in an op shop and there it was, this lone book sitting on a table.

Now, how weird is that? I broke my New Year resolution and bought it – for $5.

  1. Hmm... maybe it doesn't count as cheating though because you bought it as part of the 1degree op shop experience? :)
