THERE was a rare window of opportunity Saturday night to grab some Indian takeaway, a couple of DVDs and put my feet up in front of the telly. The two DVD picks were inspired by ABC2 Television’s Audrey Hepburn movie festival, on air Saturday nights. I knew I’d miss much of the festival and jumped the gun on Sabrina, which was showing Saturday but I wanted to get two flicks in so started early. I adored the 1954 dresses, hats, coats, coats with hats and gloves, evening gowns and the oh-so-wicked smoking and calling everyone “darling”. Did they really say that?

I Googled the movie on Sunday and found some wonderful blogger has already hunted down a pattern for the “darling” little black summer dress that another vintage clothing lover attributes to Givenchy. Well I think it’s the same dress. It’s hard to tell. The film was in black and white and the dress in this scene, near the trees, was actually in a check fabric. And Givenchy for Sabrina Fairchild? The chauffeur’s daughter? That’s Hollywood for you.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s was in colour and my favourite outfit was a burnt orange coat worn with a high cloche hat and big sunglasses. I couldn’t find a very good picture of it so this poster by Robert McGinnis will have to suffice.
